If you’re going geisha hunting, Gion is the place to do it.  There are a lot of teahouses (ochaya) in the area.  We were there fairly early in the morning, at least by Japanese standards as things don’t tend to open up until after 10 am.  So we walked around some of the back alleys and side streets and avoided a lot of the delivery truck traffic that was on the main streets.

The location marked on the map is just a general guide to where the area known as Gion actually is.  Have a look around and drop the little street view guy in some of the shops and restaurants.
